Storage Tips: How to pack, protect and maximize your storage space
Make the most of your self-storage unit with a few simple tips. Whether you’re storing household items, business inventory, or seasonal equipment, proper packing and organization will help keep your belongings safe and easy to access.
-
Start with a plan to save space, stay organized, and make moving in easier.
Choose the right size storage unit—pack efficiently to maximize every square foot
Gather supplies in advance: boxes, packing tape, markers, and protective materials like bubble wrap or packing paper
Use uniform box sizes for easier stacking and better use of space
Label every box clearly on multiple sides for quick identification
Create a home inventory list of stored items and keep it somewhere safe
Avoid overpacking—keep boxes at a manageable weight (ideally 25–30 lbs)
-
Keep your belongings in great condition with a few extra precautions.
Place a protective layer or cover on the floor before loading your unit
Use pallets or boards in drive-up units to help protect against moisture
Wrap fragile items like dishes, glassware, mirrors, and artwork carefully and label them “FRAGILE”
Cover furniture with blankets or protective materials to prevent dust buildup
Store mattresses upright and supported to help maintain their shape
Wipe down metal items (tools, bikes, equipment) to help prevent rust
Never store flammable or hazardous materials such as gasoline, propane, or solvents
-
A well-organized unit saves time and prevents damage.
Place items you may need often near the front of your unit
Leave a small aisle for easy access to your belongings
Stack heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter ones on top
Keep a small gap between walls and items to allow for air circulation
Store electronics and valuables toward the back for added protection
Disassemble furniture (like tables or bed frames) to save space
Store sofas vertically when possible and keep cushions protected
Use appliances and drawers to store smaller items and maximize space
